Company's story
Our Specialty
OUR ROOTS:
Founded in 2008, Green City Growers’ original mission was to provide home owners with the infrastructure, tools, and education to grow their own produce at home and help create more environmentally sustainable, nutrient-dense food sources from small urban and suburban spaces. By spring of 2009, GCG had expanded to serve both residential and commercial customers by forging long-standing partnerships with companies like Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare and B.good restaurants.
Early on the team saw huge potential in growing food, anywhere. Looking to advance its mission, GCG took part in the startup accelerator program MassChallenge in 2013. Through MassChallenge, the company won an award for social impact from the John Henry Foundation.
Around the same time, GCG began managing New England’s largest rooftop farm on top Whole Foods Market in Lynnfield, MA. Expanding further, GCG became the garden education services provider for the Beverly school system. This program provided every third grader in Beverly, MA the opportunity to learn hands-on how to grow their own food. GCG also became a certified benefit corporation.
In 2015, GCG became the Red Sox’s “Other Farm Team” by managing Fenway Park’s rooftop farm. The company also began programs with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston and Boston Properties. With funding from the Target Foundation, GCG also implemented a comprehensive school garden program for the Boston Public Schools. Also in 2015, the company welcomed Christopher Grallert, GCG’s then Managing Director and now President, to the team.
Green City Growers has grown significantly. The company now manages 180 unique farm and garden locations throughout the Northeast, including locations in MA, RI, CT, and NY. With plans to expand throughout the region, GCG is excited about the future of urban farming and the value GCG can bring to communities far and wide.
