About Far-UVC LEDs
LEDs are semiconductor devices that directly convert the energy of electrons into light. LEDs are compact, lightweight, highly efficient, and long-lasting, and are replacing conventional light sources in a variety of fields.
Ultraviolet light is invisible to the human eye because its wavelength is shorter than that of visible light. This ultraviolet light is classified by wavelength into UVA, UVB, and UVC, each of which has its own excellent applications.
In particular, UVC with a wavelength of 200 - 280 nm is completely absorbed by the ozone layer, making it a special type of light that does not normally exist on earth. This special light has an excellent bactericidal effect by damaging the DNA of living organisms, and UVC enables clean sterilization and water purification without the risks associated with the use of chemicals, such as drug residues and the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria. In addition, our group has conducted research on the inactivation mechanism of a new type of coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) by ultraviolet light irradiation and clarified for the first time in the world that coronavirus inactivation is caused by damage to the viral RNA.
Far-UVC refers to a special type of light with a shorter wavelength of 200 - 230 nm, which has been reported to have an excellent bactericidal effect and to be safe for the human body.
Characteristics of Far-UVC
Conventional ultraviolet UVC light is highly hazardous to living organisms and must be used in unattended environments. On the other hand, Far-UVC is highly safe for the human body, and its use in a manned environment is being verified.
In general, the shorter the wavelength of light, the more easily it is absorbed by matter, and the shorter the length of time it can penetrate into matter. Far-UVC, which is easily absorbed by proteins, is absorbed by the stratum corneum, which is composed of dead cells, and thus does not reach living cells. Therefore, it is attracting a great deal of attention as a new technology that enables surface sterilization without affecting the human body.

Our story
We are a startup from RIKEN that designs and develops semiconductor light sources. We were the first in the world to achieve an output of 1 mW in LEDs that emit a special type of light (wavelength: 200 - 230 nm) called Far-UVC. This special light has great potential to provide clean solutions to various ecological problems, such as disease prevention for farmed fish, long-term preservation of fresh food, and inactivation of allergens such as cedar pollen, in addition to replacing agricultural pesticides. We will deliver new light to reduce the burden on people and the environment by promoting a shift away from a drug-oriented approach. In April 2022, a laboratory (Virus Inactivation LED System Research Team) was established within RIKEN with the aim of commercializing Far-UVC LED. We will continue to challenge new technologies and create a bright future.
