Currently, electricity can make up 25% to 40% of a wastewater treatment plant's annual operating budget. Water treatment contributes to 5% of greenhouse gas emissions today, which excludes the additional impact of the 80% of untreated wastewater released in to nature that also releases greenhouse gases.
